I love to watch (and probably most readers of Blog di Doghelp) dog movies. We let ourselves be endeared by the (almost) always very sympathetic dogs, who also seem to be very intelligent.
The big disadvantage of dogs in films is that the kind of (breed) dog that is used, becomes extremely popular with the public. Many malicious (money) breeders are responding to the great demand for the typical breed used in a film. Frequently good breeds of dog were “ruined”, after they gained enormous popularity through a film or TV series.
Unfortunately, many potential and inexperienced dog owners think that the kind of dog in the film actually controls all the “tricks” that he shows on the white screen.
Lassie, the most famous dog of all time;
Probably Lassie is the most famous dog in the history of dog film and TV. For years from 1954 to 1973, from 1989 to 1991 and from 1997 to 1999, TV series were produced with this Scottish Shepherd Dog (Collie) in the leading role.
Lassie could do everything … ..report, protect, care for the wounded, get help, fight wolves etc.etc.
Lassie was the ideal dog. The Collie is also a beautiful dog to see, medium size, so ideal in the house. And with this intelligence perfect for every family. At least …… that was thought … That in the series on average 35 dogs were worked, each of which managed their own “trick”, that the general public did not know.
However … .. many families bought a “Lassie-dog”. In the vernacular one did not have a Collie, but a Lassie !!! The popularity was enormous.
Soon, however, the problems also came. The Collie required intensive coat care, because of skin deviations and turned out to have the eye disease PRA, also an aggression surfaced in bad bred family lines.
Too bad !!!
Lassie was followed by Benji, Hooch and also the Saint Bernard dog Beethoven became unreal popular, even though he had his counterpart Cujo on the white screen !!!
Even the cartoon film 101 Dalmatians caused a hype. Everyone wanted a Dalmatian, the ideal and fun dog. Did they really think that cartoons were reality ??
Several dogs were used in all of these films and TV series, each of which mastered their own tricks. Ignorance among the general public made these breeds overwhelmingly popular.
For years and still nowadays, Commissioner Rex has become hugely popular with the public. The sweet and tough German Shepherd Dog, working with the Austrian police. The German Shepherd Dog is unquestionably one of the most intelligent dogs, but in the Commissioner Rex series, on average five different dogs are used per episode, all of whom know their own specific tricks.
Meanwhile, also 4 different dogs have been used in the leading role over the years.
All German shepherd dogs, which are used in the series are trained by only one person, namely the American instructor Teresa Ann Miller, who was specially brought from the USA.
There is the rumor that many more shepherd dogs for the series have been used, because logically all the acting would be too much for one dog. Similarly, stunts with the dog between 1994 and 1999 were often performed by brothers of the first dog (Soko vom Haus Zieglmayer).
Needless to add, that the German shepherd dog has also gained enormous popularity among the public. This popularity has also not gone unpunished. Many lines of this beautiful and versatile dog breed appear to have hereditary hip dysplacia and back problems are the order of the day with this breed.
We took over Milo from a nephew, who did not have time to take good care for his dog. Recently, I only realized that Milo, the Jack Russell, is a key player in the film, The Mask. The Jack Russell is therefore enjoying great popularity at the moment and you see him nowadays more and more also on TV during commercials. That the Jack Russell, because of his stubbornness, is one of the more difficult dogs to raise, who is also not afraid to use his teeth, the general public unfortunately has no idea.
Our Milo is fortunately – so far – a great healthy dog and let’s hope that this nice breed will not be destroyed because of its popularity on TV.
