Deciding on the life of the dog.

Deciding on the life of the dog.

Many dog owners have to make the decision whether the dog should stay alive or whether it is fair to put the pet to sleep. These are always difficult decisions. There is also a lot of emotion involved. You love the animal and do not want to miss it. I myself made this decision a few times. Unfortunately, only after the decision you know if it was the right one.

I would like to give a few examples of the circumstances in which I made which decisions. It is up to you, the reader, to decide whether you would have acted in the same way.

My first decision;

The first time I came to decide on the fate of a dog was with my Bernese Mountain Dog Brenda. Brenda was sacred to me. I had raised and trained her from 8 weeks onwards. Brenda was also my loyal companion during my first official education as a dog instructor.

Brenda was a stiff and dominant lady, who even regularly lifted her leg to make a pee and to mark her territory. You only see this behavior in extremely dominant female dogs. Because of this domination, Brenda was a very willing working dog. She was also unanimous leader in the pack with my 5 other dogs.

Brenda unfortunately turned out to have bad hips. She suffered from heavy hip dysplacia. Because of this deviation, I let her “work” less and I used to give her the daily homeopathy drug Caniplasin. This natural medicine is made from a nettle extract and improves the location of the hip bulb in the bowl and also works muscle strengthening. After some time, Brenda also began to eat nettles, which grew along the road, during walks.

It seemed better to go;

Brenda functioned much better and seemed to be pain free. Until one day …… Brenda ran loose in the garden and suddenly fell over. She tried to get up, stumbled a few more times, and fell down. I was shocked. At first I thought her hips had failed, but after having checked her well, there appeared to be another problem. Brenda looked blurry from her eyes and seemed to completely have lost her orientation mentally. I rushed her to the vet. He found that Brenda was the victim of a cerebral infarction. In consultation I left her for observation at the vet. He told me to prepare for the decision to euthanize Brenda if she did not improve within a few days.

Every day I had contact with the vet and he told me that Brenda did not improve. She did not get up, did not eat anymore and seemed completely apathetic to the outside world.

After the third day, I made the decision to euthanize Brenda. I arrived at the vet to accompany Brenda during euthanasia. We walked to her residence. When Brenda saw me, she stood up and walked to the doorway. The vet was perplexed. He had no hope for any cure for the dog before.

No euthanasia;

I decided to take Brenda home with the hope that she would improve. For 3 months I helped Brenda with feeding, letting her outside with a towel under her stomach to support her while walking and also I had to keep her separated from the other dogs. Brenda only got worse …… it was clear that she was in pain and her reactions were always languid and apathetic. Then I made the decision to put Brenda to sleep. This life was unworthy for this animal.

I regretted afterwards that I had not put Brenda down 3 months earlier. For 3 months the animal had suffered an unworthy life and I had only kept her alive because of my own egoism, because I did not want to lose her !!!

Honest for the dog;

A few years later a cancer swelled on the crotch bone in one of my other dogs. This is the bone where the tail makes contact with the back. The cancer grew as large as a football within a few weeks. Because of the nasty and delicate position, the tumor could not be removed. At the moment that I noticed that the dog was beginning to experience pain, I immediately took the decision to euthanize. I did not want the animal to suffer unnecessarily.

Protecting animals means that you do the best for the animal. However, when the hope of a pain-free or reasonable quality of life has become impossible, animal protection is also putting down the animal.

It is animal abuse when, to keep an animal alive, when it is hurt and for egoistic reasons.

Your dog is your best friend. However, if your best friend can no longer lead a normal and normal life, then you make the choice for your friend not to let him suffer unnecessarily !!!

It is a matter of being honest for the animal and for yourself !!!!
